What does being in competition at such a prestigious festival mean to you personally and professionally?
It’ s a bit surreal. I feel really thankful. To do all that hard work and for people to like something is amazing!
There’ s always a risk when reimagining iconic stories – especially one as beloved as beloved as Sherlock Holmes. What do you think sets Sherlock & Daughter apart from previous adaptations?
We have David Thewlis, who I think is on par with all the names we already know! To me he’ s one of the greatest actors ever. He’ s to me one of the greatest actors ever. And so immediately I think there’ s something special about our show because we have such a great Sherlock. It’ s hard to not love the show and enjoy it because he’ s so good at playing Sherlock and it’ s such a different iteration of the character.
What drew you the most to this character?
I think I was definitely excited to do something that wasn’ t like sci-fi or horror because most of the characters I play have been in that universe. So, doing something that was a period piece and like a drama, but like a comedy and it’ s very kind and sweet. Being able to play a character in that world was really exciting to me.
And obviously, you know, representing my background, indigenous character in Victorian England. There are a lot of parts of me where I relate to Amelia for sure. I’ m definitely not a detective. When we were making the show the one thing I found difficult was that I think the idea of the detective in a very British way, it’ s just so different. The American detective and the European. The British detective is so different. In the US, we have noir with Humphrey Bogart, who is very moody and a cop, or Brad Pitt in Seven who is a hard-boiled guy. And then, the British idea of the detective is so different. Any part of me that related to the idea of investigation, was coming much more from like a place which I grew up in. Plus having to acclimate to the language of British and English writing and making it sound normal in my voice, was very difficult.
What is the part that will resonate the most with the audience?
I think the family relations. In the audience there was like a father there with his little kid and they were there watching it together. The show is universal. I think that’ ll be the part that really stands out and makes the show really fun to watch for families and old fans of Sherlock and people who are only getting into Sherlock for the first time. Everyone can find something.
