Alexis Day Dr. Kankanamge, your healthcare career accolades for your expertise as an Osteopathic physician run impressively deep, and you are world renown. With degrees such BSc (Hons) Osteo, DPO, Dip.Acu, deservedly perched behind your name, and your vision of a future of well-being for all, you have garnered 25 years in successfully treating patients, in excess of 10,000 patients in fact. Will you share with us what your treatment approach has been, and expound a bit more about your vision of well being for all? Sen Wellness Sanctuary C ontemporary, holistic medicine is a science, as well as an art. When it comes to diagnosing and treating a patient I use the scientific approach of the practices I have been trained in, and I bring this together with a creative method. Every patient is unique and the manifestation of health and illness in their body is related to their personal lifestyle, upbringing and their living and working environment. This means that each individual needs to be treated with a method that is appropriate for them. During treatment I include a range of systems, such as Osteopathy, Cranial Osteopathy, acupuncture, energetic and emotional techniques to work on different dimensions – physical, emotional, mental, energy and spiritual. It is possible to fluctuate across different dimensions to bring about clarity, remove blockages and stress patterns and form connections and alignments. I discovered the importance of continuous professional and self-development early in my career. I have continued to engage in learning, developing my skills and expertise so I can continue working effectively with my patients. There is a process and journey that I go through with patients. I support them in being present to their own emotions, and the mental state that informs their body. To enable sustainable lifestyle changes, I also prescribe yoga, meditation and nutritional advice. I have another category of patient in those that are healthy and are keen to maintain optimum health and wellbeing. They recognise the value of staying healthy, so that they can have a fulfilling professional and personal life. Sen Wellness offers holistic health services in which myself and my London team work closely with patients over a given period to support their lifestyles and improve their sense of wellbeing. It is my view, from gathering empirical evidence, that symptoms of people’s illness and disease states are more than their physical components, those which are emotional, mental and spiritual need addressing alongside any treatment of the body. It should be a fundamental part of health care to empower and educate our patients so they understand and have insight into why they have these symptoms and to help them to shift their patterns, daily habits and lifestyle, to bring about harmony and balance in their bodies.
